Window Treatments Can Be
Beautiful, Functional and Unique
Our house is full of great big,
original windows. Most mini-blinds and curtains are not pre-cut by
manufacturers to suit windows of this size. Therefore, we have learned
to be quite creative in finding window treatments to suit our home.
One option we've tried is buying oversized window treatments, such as
blinds and having them cut down to size. One problem we've encountered
however, is that where the drawstrings are positioned, often interferes
with where we can have the blinds cut, causing them be a little off in
their covering of our windows (either too big or slightly too small.) We
have tried restringing the blinds, with my husband drilling new holes,
and attempting to string them in the same fashion as they originally
were, however, this is a very time-consuming task, and very difficult to
complete successfully.
Recently, just after Christmas, my husband struck upon a bonanza of
window covers. He was able to purchase about six wooden blinds and four
drapery panels, at approximately 10% of the original cost. (One of the
blinds he purchased was originally priced at $150 and my husband got it
for only $10!) Some of these window treatments lacked the necessary
hardware required to hang them, but that was okay since my husband was
able to harvest the hardware from the off-sized blinds to fit the window
covers that suited our windows. This terrific find resulted in three of
our main windows being covered in good quality window treatments, along
with beautiful drapery panels. We had to be patient to find such a
terrific deal, but in this case our patience definitely paid off!
At the very front of our house, in our main living room, my husband was
having such difficulty finding suitable window covers, that he decided
to make one from scratch. He ended up going to a discount fabric store
and purchasing some beautiful, heavy material. He then proceeded to make
drapes, sewing on all the detailing including tab-tops. He also
constructed a curtain rod and curved wooden brackets to hang the rod.
All the wood was stained a nice deep color. He even affixed beautiful
finials to the ends of the rod for a more finished look. These window
treatments are beautiful and functional.
Using a little creativity and not being afraid to try something new can
result is great discoveries. My husband has been able to find suitable
window treatments for nearly all of the windows in our house, resulting
in a beautiful, functional and unique look that's all our own.
